Homemade Recipes- Syrup

I'm on a mission to impact our budget even more this year with homemade recipes.  I will be sharing the ones I've personally tried out and recommend!  I plan to try out not only recipes to use in the kitchen, but also household recipes.  Here's the first one:

Homemade Syrup:
2 c sugar
1c water
1 tsp maple extract

Bring water and sugar to a slow boil over low heat, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat before it comes to a rolling boil.  Add flavoring as it is cooling.  Store in the refrigerator.

Cost Analysis (24 oz):
Homemade: $.30
Store Bought: $4.00

(*No preservatives or high fructose corn syrup!)

My entire family LOVES this syrup, especially my hubby.  I recommend you save your last syrup bottle to store it in....syrup dripping down a plastic container is a mess! :)

Enjoy!

  1. You can also make other flavors!!! Same method, but instead of maple, use 1 koolaid packet. I've only made strawberry (for milk.) But this post reminds me that any flavor could be good on waffles or pancakes!

I also make my own choc. syrup similarly - with cocoa. (my daughter is allergic to corn...that's why I've gone this route)
