Missing Coupons in Your Insert? Here's Why...

Ever look through your inserts looking for a coupon that is "supposed" to be there, according to coupon match ups, only to come up empty handed?    Carrie from Pocket Your Dollars has done her research on the this dilema.  Her article includes:

4 Reasons Your Newspaper May Have Different Coupons Than Your Neighbor:

Buying Coupons Online

Is ordering coupons online smart?  Read the info below, adapted from Ezine and Wicked Cool Deals, for some great info on why it's worth the time!

Why Buy Coupons Online?

Have you ever picked up the coupons in the Sunday paper and gotten really excited to see a great coupon for a product you love and buy all the time? And, it's a product you know goes on sale all the time? How great would it be to have a bunch of those coupons to score that deal multiple times! That's what buying coupons online can do. You can score that great deal 10, 15, even 20 times!  Buying coupons is a great way to save time and money because you can stock up on items cheaply.   Buying coupons online is an savvy money saving strategy to get really cheap (even free!) groceries, health/beauty products and household goods.

How Do I Search for Coupons?
When searching for coupons on Ebay, it is best to be as specific as possible. For example, don't just type in "coupons" as you will be sucked into a vast sea of coupons for sale. You could start by being a little general; for example searching "ice cream coupons" or "cereal coupons." You could also be more specific by searching "Breyer's ice cream coupons," or "Hood ice cream coupons," or "Kellogg's cereal coupons." If you are searching for a coupon you saw in the Sunday paper, be very specific and search "$.50 off Hood sour cream." Because I really like the $.50/1, $.60/1 and $.75/1 coupons, sometimes I'll simply search for those. I also search "BOGO coupons" or "Buy One Get One Free" coupons.

What Should I Look Out For When Buying Coupons?
(1) Product. Make sure you understand exactly the product for which the coupon is valid. Is it valid for ANY Orville Redenbacher Popcorn, or just the "Natural" Popcorn? Is it good for ANY Breyer's Ice Cream, or just Breyer's Frozen Yogurt?
(2) Expiration Dates. Be sure you are going to have time to use the coupons. And the closer the expiration date, the cheaper the coupons.
(3) Coupon Value. Make sure you know the exact value of the coupon. Is it $1.00 off 1 or $1.00 off 2? Is it $.35/1 or $.35/3?
(4) Shipping/Fees. Make sure you are clear on whether shipping is extra or included in the price of the coupon and any other fees.

How Do You Know What Coupons to Buy?
Think about several things:
(1) What do I need to stock up on? Check your stockpile and focus on what is needed.
(2) What great coupons have I seen in the Sunday paper? If a coupon has been in the Sunday paper, someone is selling it!
(3) What grocery items are on sale at my local grocery stores? Looking ahead at store inserts that are available online ahead of time, like Walgreens inserts @ I Heart Wags, can help you in planning on what items would be the smartest to buy coupons for.
(4) If there is a good Catalina deal going on, I am buying coupons on Ebay.
(5) Is there a great deal somewhere where I can get a free or close to free item after coupon?
(6) Most important - am I getting a DEAL? It's always about the per unit cost, including the cost of the coupons. Always do the math and zero in on the really good deals that are worth my time.

More info on the topic:
"Couponing is often seen as a way to save small amounts of money on small purchases. The word coupon evokes images of people spending hours searching through newspapers, magazines and junk mail trying to make a small dent in their weekly grocery bill. Recently, coupons have started to shake off that negative image. With the help of internet sites that specialize in targeting coupons of high value and selling them for a small fee, couponing has started to become a more viable way to save money and put a much larger dent in the savvy consumer's budget.  The best way to save money by buying coupons online is to plan ahead. One shouldmake lists of all the anticipated upcoming events in the household, everyday services that the consumer plans on using, and household items needed."

Now to be able to get ahead and look ahead is the challenge.  Oh couponing, the never ending job/duty/hobby!

The Best Valentine’s Gifts Can Be Frugal!

Valentine's Day on a Budget

The following is a guest post from Stacy from Saving in Akron:
Whether you’ve been married for 50 years or are in a budding relationship, everyone wants to show their sweetie some love on Valentine’s Day. With the current economic situation, money is very tight for a lot of people, and many people are still dealing with holiday expenses. However, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to show someone you care. In fact, some of the best ideas for spending Valentine’s Day are also the cheapest. You just need to get creative.
Here are some thoughtful yet frugal ways to show your significant other how much you care:
  • Forgo the presents this year and write your sweetie a heartfelt letter telling him/her how you truly feel. You might even consider putting it in a frame so they can look at it often. There is nothing more touching or special then receiving a declaration of undying love and devotion. This is a treasure they will guard for the rest of their lives.
  • Send your significant other on a scavenger hunt. Leave clues for them in various places around your house or around your town. The prize can be finding you, finding the letter you wrote above, homemade goodies or anything that you know is near and dear to your sweetie’s heart.
  • Make a homemade card or gift. If you’re a crafter, make them a scrapbook of your time spent together through the years. Or, knit or crochet a hat or a scarf. If you like to bake, make them their favorite dessert or some Valentine themed cookies. If you’re a guy, do some tasks around the house or finish some long forgotten projects. Nothing spells out love like a homemade gift.
  • Give  a gift that will linger on long past Valentine’s Day. Couponers love coupons, so make them a coupon book with “special” coupons for things like a massage, a day off from the kids, or no dishes for a week. This way, as they use the coupons up, you will be reminded all year of how much you love each other.
  • There’s no need to spend a lot of money going out to dinner. Cook dinner together and make it special by getting dressed up, having some wine, and of course, having someone else watch the kids. You can even light candles and spread out some rose petals. Light a fire if you have a fireplace. Relax and enjoy each other’s company.
  • Surprise your sweetie with your own wine and cheese tasting event. Buy a couple of bottles of reasonably priced and wine and several types of cheese that you’ve never tried. If you’re not into cheese, make a chocolate fondue with fresh or dried fruit.
  • Take your sweetie to a museum. Many museums offer free admission and if not, most museums charge a nominal admission. Spend the day strolling around the museum and perhaps stop and linger over coffee and dessert afterwards.
  • Spend the day learning something new together. Perhaps you’ve wanted to learn to play golf or ice skate. Maybe now is the time to set aside that day to learn it together.
  • Serve your honey breakfast in bed. There’s nothing nicer than being served breakfast in bed. Make it special with heart shaped pancakes or stuffed French toast and perhaps a single red rose in a vase.
  • Create a playlist of your favorite songs for your sweetie’s IPOD, or put together a compilation video/DVD of your home movies.
  • Give your sweetie a Valentine’s Day gift basket. You can put in some homemade goodies, or head off to the dollar store or the sample section of your favorite store to help you fill up your basket.
  • Go on a picnic. Head out to the park if you live where the weather is warm. If it’s colder where you live, have an indoor picnic in front of the fireplace. Fill up a basket with your favorite snacks and goodies, add in a nice bottle of wine, and enjoy.
  • Give your partner some free time. There’s nothing nicer for a busy mom or dad to get some time off away from the kids. Offer to take the kids out for the afternoon or arrange to have a friend watch them.
  • Recreate your first date. Show your significant other how much you love them by remembering all of the details of your first date.
  • If you’ve been married a while, renew your wedding vows. Saying you would marry her (or him) all over again means more than any gift you could give. You don’t need the big party this time either. Just stay in afterwards and snuggle.
  • Spend Valentine’s Day helping others who are less fortunate. Volunteer together. There are hundreds of opportunities available within your own community. Check out volunteermatch.org or serve.gov for ideas. You can also contact your local United Way office or any other local charity for additional opportunities.
Remember, Valentine’s Day isn’t about the size or the amount of money you spent on the gift, it’s about showing the person you’re with how much you care.

Catalina Q and A

Q:  What is a Catalina?

A:  Catalina Category Marketing (CCM) rewards purchases of promoted products with “catalinas,” also known as “check-out coupons”. A Catalina or cat, looks like a cash register receipt, it's long and white, and prints out of a machine that's next to the cash register. Sometimes it is just advertising, and other times it is a coupon for so much off a certain product, or it can be a coupon that says "$3 off your next order." (acronym-oyno)

Q: Are Catalinas manufacturer's coupons or store coupons?

A: Generally, they are manufacturer's coupons, although occasionally one will state that it is a Store Coupon. The manufacturer's coupon Catalinas can not  be combined with other manufacturer's coupons.  In other words, if you have a catalina for $1.00/2 product X and also an insert coupon for $1.00/2, you would need to purchase four of the product in order to use both coupons.

Q: Can I use a catalina coupon at a store other than the one where it printed?

A: Typically yes, if the other store accepts competitor's coupons, but it also depends on the store. Some stores take catalinas from other stores, but only if they say manufacturer coupon on them.  The easiest thing for you to do is ask at your store. Pay attention, because often manufacturer Catalinas that print at Dillons have the Dillons logo on them, but this does not mean they can only be redeemed there.  Take a look at the barcode and if it has the double barcode, the first one starting with a 5 or a 9, and says manufacturer coupon, you should have no problem. Most of them say "redeemable at X" but will usually not say "redeemable ONLY at X."

Q: I have a catalina that says "excludes RX and items prohibited by law."  What items are the other items that are prohibited?

A: Stamps, alcohol, lottery, gift cards, customer services purchases ie light bill, auto tags and tobacco.

Q: If I think a Catalina should have printed from my purchase and it didn't, can I go to the service desk and get a cash refund or can I contact the Catalina Company?

A: If your Catalina coupons don't print, you can always try to resolve it with the store first, where you may be issued a cash refund if the deal is advertised at that store.  This will generally bring the fastest resolution.  What to do if they can't help or you just don't have the time to wait in line at Customer Service?  Call the Catalina Company directly at 1-888-8COUPON (1-888-826-8766).

Q:  Can you roll one Catalina from one deal into the same deal on your next transaction? Or is it like Walgreens where you can't use it to buy the same products again?

A:  Walgreens is the ONLY store that I know of that won't roll Catalinas. Dillons  will roll them.

Q: How can I contact Catalina Category Marketing, in case I have a question about whether my local store is doing a particular promotion?

A: Their toll free numbers are 1-(888) 322-3814 or 1-888-8COUPON (1-888-826-8766).

Q:  Where can I find out about current unadvertised Catalinas?

A:  Check out Hot Coupon World!  There are several forums devoted to them by specific stores!
